Where does that come from?

The autonomic nervous system consists of two large nerve cords, the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous system. It controls vital bodily functions that we cannot consciously control, such as heartbeat, breathing and digestion.

The sympathetic nervous system releases the hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline, which activate the organ tissue, expand the airways, accelerate the heartbeat and raise blood pressure. Energy is drawn from the digestive and immune systems, preparing us to flee from danger or to fight.

The parasympathetic nervous system is the antagonist and ensures relaxation and balance. Its messenger substance acetylcholine lowers the heart rate and therefore the pulse, narrows the airways and increases bowel movement. We need to be in a calm state in order to digest effectively and energise our immune system.

Under normal conditions, these two systems are in balance, each reacting appropriately to external signals. For example, if an antelope is chased by a lion, the sympathetic nervous system ensures that it can flee. When the danger has passed, the parasympathetic nervous system kicks in again, the antelope shakes off the stress and goes back to grazing.

Many people, however, experience an imbalance in their autonomic control functions. They find themselves in a permanent state of stress, of alarm. This can lead to many physical complaints (see above) and/or the feeling of utter overwhelm.

Why do we get into constant stress at all?

Our nervous system can lose the ability to self-regulate. This can be due to:

  • Being exposed to a stress factor over a long period of time. For example, having to be reachable or available 24 hours a day. This, over time, causes a permanent state of alarm.
  • The stress factor not having been processed as we were too young at the time, or the event having been very sudden or simply too strong.

It is of course understandable to be in a constant state of alert if we have to be available or reachable 24/7. Or if we have experienced something that has caused us a great deal of stress, such as an accident or if we have actually been exposed to great danger. However, I would like to pay particular attention to something that is not immediately recognised as a stress factor, but which may still be affecting you today.

The chances are big that you have often felt insecure during your childhood, and this is extremely stressful. When we are exposed to stress factors over a lengthy period of time, we set certain survival strategies in place. These are then stored in our nervous system so that we can react more quickly in the same or similar situations in the future. This has ensured our survival in the past. However, these old imprints from our childhood may no longer serve us as adults as there is no rational (adult) thinking involved. We continue reacting and behaving as we did as a child as that is the strategy our nervous system knows. You know that feeling on running on an automatic programme, always reacting the same way?

Let me give you an example of how your constant stress could have arisen in childhood, knowing that everyone grows up under different conditions. You may not even be aware that your nervous system was programmed in childhood. Or that these programmes are responsible for your constant stress.

If your parents told you as a child that you had to behave differently, you may have come to believe that there was something wrong with you, that you were not as you should be. You had to be “good” and conform to their expectations. To do so you had to hide your true self, to behave differently in order to be recognised, seen and hopefully loved. This is now what you continue doing as it became your survival strategy and the conviction that you are ‘wrong’ got stored in your nervous system. A strategy is a strategy, and we believe it has been keeping us safe since childhood, so we keep on repeating it, just like the antelope continues running from the lion. The feeling that you are ‘wrong’ triggered a strong feeling of insecurity you still carry with you. Feeling insecure is stressful and that runs your nervous system to this day.

If the belief you are wrong is still imprinted in your nervous system, you will be as insecure today as you were as a child. Over the course of your life, you will have probably added unconsciously more behavioural patterns, all based on the same concept. It may seem absurd but be gentle on yourself, it did ensure your survival back then.

Today you may be trying to change something in your life because you do not feel aligned or happy or because you can no longer cope with everyday life, or because you are suffering from one or more of the stress symptoms listed above. You probably have no idea what the real cause of the stress is, whether at work, with your family or with your partner. You don’t realise that old childhood programming running your nervous system in the background may be the cause. This happens even when we have already done a lot of work on ourselves and have become more aware. Still then, you may encounter extreme inner resistance as soon as you attempt to change something. Your nervous system doesn’t give up on its imprints that easily – after all, we are talking survival here. Could you be in survival mode?

Another example of a common imprint from childhood is the feeling of not being enough. Simply not being sufficient. Can you imagine how insecure that made you feel?

What can you do to help your nervous system return to a normal, healthy state?

A nervous system that is in a state of alarm, for whatever reason, needs safety. When safe, it will calm down. Just like the antelope starts grazing again once the danger has passed and it feels safe.

No matter what provoked the “alarm state”, know that your nervous system can switch back to the parasympathetic nervous system when you feel safe again. Your digestion and immune system can then be re-energised. You will be able to calm down and relax again. The inner voice that is driving you will quieten down over time.

It is also important to become aware of which imprints caused this strong feeling of insecurity and of the behaviour you have become accustomed to. You can only change and let go of what you are conscious of.
